Super absorbent polymers (SAP) are very unique water-absorbing and water-holding
materials. It can absorb up to 500 times of its own weight of pure water and even
under pressure resist release of the absorbed water.
They are solid, granular or powder cross linked polymers that rapidly absorb and
retain large volumes of aqueous solutions. The absorptive properties of SAP are
ideally suited for the absorption and solidification of various types of liquids
like water, sludge and blood.
SAP applications:
1) Personal care: SAP is used industry-wide in diapers, training pants, adult
incontinence products and external feminine hygiene products
2) Agricultural and gardening applications: SAP has excellent applications in agriculture
and gardening, because SAP can absorb and store huge amounts of water and
easily release water to the roots of the plants gradually up to 6 months. It
significantly reduces the amount of watering required by plants
3) Cable wrappings: SAP can absorb huge amounts of aqueous liquids even under
fairly high pressure. This property makes SAP capable to protect underground
electric and telecommunicate cables against moistures and ware leakage. To
prevent the damages caused by the moistures, the SAP is used alone or in
combination with a non-woven material between the wires and the outer plastic
cover of the cable
